Do we cry, do we weep, do we show anger? I’m not sure, I haven’t been through a season like this in my life. Then again, either has most of the Dolphins. So what went wrong? What ended the most magical season since the
1972 team?

First: The main thing, over Pennington, the wildcat, and the stand up defense, the main thing that kept the Dolphins season going, was the lack of turnovers. All season, 16 games, the Dolphins committed only 13 turnovers.
In one game they committed 5. You cant win a game, even if you are a great team, if you commit that many turnovers.

Second: Quiet Porter, for the entire season, Joey Porter was the loudest player in the NFL. Terrell Owens and Chad Johnson were telling him to shut up. But he backed it up, well that was until December. Porter finished with
1 sack the final 5 games of the season. It’s not enough. You can blame the fact that the Dolphins had no other pass rushers so teams could double on Porter but he wasn’t beating one on ones either.

Third: The Ravens wanted it, there’s no doubt. The Fins made mistakes but the Ravens wanted this game, they didn’t seem content on just making the playoffs.

This team is close, but the Ravens kindly showed us how truly far away they are. The season ends, but the work is not done. The Browns had a shocking run only to lose double digit games this year. It’s easy to fall back down, the Dolphins must make the right moves to make sure they are able to stay on top.

While the Cinderella season may end the Sunday, no one will be booing this Dolphin team for an early playoff exit. However, don’t expect the Dolphins to be content on just winning the division. This team believes in itself more than any Dolphin team has in years past. They are underdogs, but remember they have been underdogs the entire season. They already lost to the ravens, well they had already lost to the jets before last week and we all know how that ended.

Last year Dolphin’s players and fans expected to lose. This year we hope to win. Great teams expect to win. While the Dolphins aren’t there yet, they are getting close. For the time being, let’s enjoy the privilege of being a team that hopes to win, and actually does. Hopefully Baltimore is not the midnight team for this Cinderella season.

But Polite was just stopped. Do you give the ball to him again? Do you give the ball to your pro bowl running back? No, Sparano knew who to give the ball to. The Miami Dolphins MVP, who should also be the NFL MVP. The man who was also thrown out of New York to the sound of “we want Brett.” The fans that cheered him for 8 years, the organization that drafted him, they all agreed he had nothing left. So with a final chance to end it, a chance to win the game, the division, and complete the greatest season to season turnaround in NFL history, Sparano knew exactly who to give the ball to. It may be the greatest quarterback sneak in Dolphins history, you knew he would get it; nothing could stop him on this day.

This is what the Dolphins have been missing since Dan Marino retired. Take not everyone, you don’t need a Manning to win, you need a leader. Someone the team can look to for leadership. A quarterback that inspires the defense to play harder, the offensive line to hold a block longer, a coach to risk more and fan’s to finally cheer again.

Everyone has already said it, “This would make a great movie!” Chad Pennington, thrown out of New York like a used napkin, returning with a team that went 1-15 last year, returning to New York for the first time, returning to give the ultimate blow. New Yorkers are still hurting from the Florida Marlins delivering a knockout blow to the Mets two straight years in New York. This would be the feather in the cap, the icing on the cake, not only to knock off the Jets and end their playoff hopes but to put the Dolphins into the playoffs. It’s the oldest story, the rivalry between New York and Florida goes way beyond sports. Thanks to the Marlins we have given the New Yorkers two years of misery, but now comes the big one. Can we do it? It won’t be easy, but then again nothing this year has.

While everyone outside of New York and because of Sunday’s results, Massachusetts, will be rooting for Pennington to win, there are still some major factors to take into account. First, the Jets beat the Dolphins, you can say what you want about that win, but they did beat the Dolphins. Second, as we have seen with Kansas City, Seattle, San Francisco and Oakland, teams can hang around with the Dolphins. While the Dolphins have closed the door on those teams, they haven’t closed the door on a team like the Jets, in their home stadium. Finally, the Jets will be playing with complete desperation, and the last time the Dolphins played a big game against a strong team, the Patriots beat the Dolphins.

The Dolphins will be the underdogs in this game. They will have to play in a hostile stadium, against a good team, in bad conditions. No one would be shocked if the Dolphins lose this game 35-10. Despite the wins we have seen the Dolphins weaknesses in every area of the game. But that’s what makes them such a great story. They aren’t number one in offense or defense, they don’t have anyone with eye popping numbers. They just play as a team, win as a team, and amaze us as a team. This Sunday in New York, if the Dolphins win it won’t be because of Chad Pennington, it will be because they played like a team against a group of millionaires. Pennington is the general, but every general needs his army if he wants to win.

Teams who have to earn their way into bowl games in the past, would now have to lose their way into one. Overall interest in the bowls would drop, costing the communities millions of dollars. We know a playoff system would give us a clear cut winner rather than speculation, but right now with this economy it may come at too high a price.
